(This
is NOT part of the licensed adult day care program which operates
at the CARE Center. Respite is a separate program, at a different
location on adjoining property.)
Pearl's Place
is CARE's "Ronald McDonald" house. It provides a place
for overnight and weekend supervision for CARE participants when
their caregivers are away.
There are few
things more physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausting than
being a 24-hour caregiver. Seeing the gradual decline in caregiver's
energy was the catalyst behind the cottage.
Before the
existence of Pearl's Place, caregivers had no alternative except
putting their loved ones temporarily in a nursing home. If the person
doesn¹t need 24-hour nursing care, using a nursing home for
respite time is expensive and involves a new environment which further
confuses those who are already confused.
In addition
to providing an overnight facility for participants so caregivers
can have more respite time, the cottage can be used by people from
around the country who want help while recovering from surgery.
Most Escapees
bring their RV to the Center and live in it while recovering, but
sometimes it is not practical to move an RV to Texas for a short
recovery period. Arrangements can be made to have the surgery in
Houston, where some of the finest hospitals and doctors in the country
are located, and then rent part of the cottage during the recovery
period. Reservations are necessary.
The cottage rents for $40/day. In addition to rent, caregivers are
responsible for getting and paying a sitter if needed.
