Would you like to be a volunteer?
If you have a desire to share yourself, your experiences, and your skills with others who really appreciate you, we would like to offer you that opportunity by joining the volunteer team at Escapees CARE in Livingston, TX. If you can devote at least a month and are prepared to work a minimum of 24 hours per week per person for CARE we will provide you with a full hook-up site (you pay for propane and electricity) and all meals.
If you cannot commit to a full month at CARE but are going to be at
Rainbow's End for a short time, you are welcome to volunteer on a daily
basis. We have a number of jobs that can be done at your leisure.
Every year CARE certifies 80 to 100 volunteers as having provided over 100 hours of volunteer service. Many of these volunteers return yearly (or more frequently when they are able) for which CARE is very grateful. This is a testament to how much they enjoy their time here.
CARE is a great place to meet people and forge friendships. The varied and colorful backgrounds of both the residents and volunteers provides endless hours of sharing stories and laughter. We have had volunteers whose backgrounds range from a professional jockey to a CIA agent and residents who were WWII prisoners to sweet little school teachers. How can you beat a rainbow like that?
What jobs would you do?
Volunteers work a rotating schedule. The typical jobs consist of: morning and afternoon shifts in the kitchen, driving resident to appointments, opening and closing the CARE Center building, monitoring the phone at night (this doesn’t mean staying up all night), and some light cleaning. Two evenings each week the volunteers prepare and serve the meal. These are light meals (usually salads, soup & sandwich, etc.) and the staff cooks counsel the volunteers beforehand so the meal goes smoothly.
The kitchen shifts typically last 3 – 4 hours. Driving assignments generally are local and require only an hour or two. There are, however, exceptions. That is to be expected. After all, we are here to help our residents.
Volunteers work as teams. For couples this allows both team members to be off at the same time. In the case of singles, we pair two singles to form a team. They are then treated as any other team.
How much time off do you have?
We prefer to have five teams each month. With a 5-team schedule, each week two teams will have two days off (not consecutive) and the others will have one day off. This rotates with the schedule as do the jobs. If we have fewer than 5 teams then each team has 1 day of per week. We understand that some would prefer to work 3 or 4 eight-hour days and then have the rest of the week off. Most, however, prefer the shorter daily hours. The schedule we use presently was developed by volunteers and has worked quite well for the last 3 years.
Is there a VOLUNTEER hiding inside you?
If there is and it is ready to ESCAPE, call the CARE Volunteer Coordinator at 1-936-327-4256 or e-mail carevc@escapees.com.
